A National Workshop on Nomenclature, Norms, Standards and Curriculum for Teacher's Training Institutions of Physical Education in India

General
  1. The need of having a detailed deliberations among the stake-holders in physical education was increasingly felt over the past few years specially to ensure qualitative standardised out put from all Institutions imparting training in physical education.

  2. Maj. Gen. S. N. Mukherjee, the honourable Vice-Chancellor of the pioneer & prestigious Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior (LNIPE), after detailed & continuous deliberations with various authorities such as Chairman UGC, Chairman NCTE, Chairman NCERT, Chairman AICTE and many other veterans/experts in the field of physical education & sports, conceived to hold a National Workshop on "Nomenclature, Norms, Standards and Curriculum for Teacher's Training Institutions of Physical Education in India".

  3. With the full support & blessings of Prof. S. K. Thakur, Chairman NCTE and other resource persons of National repute a three day National Workshop was organized by LNIPE in the institute premises from 16-18th February, 2006.

Objective
  1. The main objectives of the conference were :

    1. To bring uniformity in the Nomenclature of the courses being offered in Physical Education throughout India.

    2. To upgrade the norms and standards of various teacher’s training courses in physical education.

    3. To bring uniformity in curriculum of various courses offered by teacher’s training institute’s of physical education.

    4. To examine the global impact that the teacher’s training institutes of physical education in India can have on health science & fitness.

    5. To examine the necessity of introducing four-year integrated professional programme in physical education at par with the foreign universities.

Participation
  1. It was extremely encouraging to observe that almost all experts in the field of physical education, who were requested to attend as resource person, not only made themselves available but took keen interest & participated in all deliberations. The names of experts participated are given at Annexure –A.

  2. Though Prof. S. K. Thakur, Chairman NCTE was very keen to attend the workshop at least on the presentation day but could not do so due to certain urgent commitments at Delhi. However, his representative Shri G. C. Rout, Under Secretary, NCTE dealing with the subject very effectively participated in all the three days deliberations of the workshop.

Conduct of Workshop
  1. In the Inaugural season the organizing secretary of the workshop Dr. A. K. Datta gave out the objective of the National Workshop and as to how the workshop has been proposed to be conducted. Maj. Gen. S. N. Mukherjee, Vice Chancellor, LNIPE as the chief guest of the function stressed on the importance and need of physical education being recognized as a profession which has the enormous responsibility of keeping all human being physically fit & mentally alert. He further stressed that this can only be achieved by enrolling students with right aptitude and attitude in institutions of physical education, extensive professional training at the accredited institutes having adequate facility to do so and finally as in all other profession following the laid down ethics and code of conduct.

  2. For ease of detailed deliberations, the experts/resource persons were grouped in four syndicates and allowed to brain stormed in four technical seasons in first two days to prepare their draft recommendations. The four syndicates were as under :

    Syndicate – I : Nomenclature, Norms & Standards and Curriculum for C.P.Ed. Programme
    Syndicate – II : Nomenclature, Norms & Standards and Curriculum for B.P.Ed. Programme
    Group – III : Nomenclature, Norms & Standards and Curriculum for M.P.Ed. Programme
    Group – IV : Nomenclature, Norms & Standards and Curriculum for B.Ph.Ed. Programme

    Names of Resource persons/ participants syndicate wise are given at Annexure-B attached.

  3. Further, each syndicate was sub-divided into two sub syndicates. The first sub syndicate to discuss Nomenclature and Standards and the second sub syndicate to frame the Curriculum of course contents. First two days were devoted to discussion and deliberation in specified sub syndicate and syndicate.

  4. The third day of the workshop was totally devoted to presentations by each syndicate on their philosophy & criteria for additions/alternations recommended in the present system being followed by NCTE. All participant took active part in critically examining their proposal for about two hours for each syndicate and finally came to certain draft recommendation which are elaborated in Annexure-C to Annexure-F attached.

  5. The valedictory function which was the last event of the National workshop was attended by all participants and other invited guests. Maj. Gen. S. N. Mukherjee, the Vice-Chancellor, LNIPE while summing up the activities of the National Workshop thanked all the participants for their fruitful contribution. He thanked the Chairman NCTE for making the services of Sh. G. C. Rout, Under Secretary, NCTE available for the workshop. He specially thanked Sh. G. C. Rout for his continued presence throughout the workshop inspite of his busy schedule and for his positive contribution in all the seasons of the workshop.

  6. At the end, the vice-chancellor urged the professionals in the field of physical education to visit the Institute website www.lnipe.net and go through the recommendations of various syndicates once again and send their valued suggestions if any before 31st March, 2006, so that the same could be examined once again by the selected panel before the recommendations are finally sent to NCTE for their perusal & implementation.
