Introduction :
Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education was established in the year 1957 with a sole purpose of producing quality teachers in the field of Physical Education. During that time, the duration of training in Physical Education used to be of one-year but under the able stewardship of Padam Shri Dr. P. M. Joseph, the Institute started offering three-year programme of Bachelor of Physical Education after higher secondary. In 1963, the Institute covered yet another mile stone by offering two years Master of Physical Education.
As time passed, due to increase in breadth and depth of knowledge, it was felt that even three-year duration was insufficient and in order to keep pace with the developing and developed countries, a four-year programme for the preparation of teachers in the Physical Education was started from the Academic Year 2003-04.
Institute campus covers an area of about 153 acres and is fully residential. The Institute has spacious classrooms, laboratories, research block, auditorium & administrative block. It has six boys hostels, four girls hostels, separate mess for boys and girls, health center, an indoor swimming pool, indoor cricket pitch, two indoor gymnasium complexes, Judo hall, Table-Tennis hall, Weight Lifting & Weight Training halls and a Squash Rackets court. The Institute has well laid play fields for outdoor games and sports. The Institute’s library is stocked with professional books and literature. It subscribes to several National/International professional and research Journals/Magazines/Periodicals and is undoubtedly the best of its kind in India. The research laboratories are also well equipped with modern and sophisticated equipment's to cater to the scholarly thrust and needs of the students.
The Institute has adequate well-qualified faculty members. Most of the faculty members have been trained in foreign countries.

Adequate outdoor and Indoor facilities comprising of standard cinder track and training track, two football fields, two hockey fields, one cricket field with seating facility (75 yards) five Basketball courts, four Volleyball courts, two tennis courts, two kho-kho courts, two kabaddi courts, one net ball court, three multipurpose halls (bigger one for volleyball, basketball, handball, net ball, tennis etc., medium for Gymnastic, Badminton, Yoga, double storied hall for Table Tennis, Weight Lifting, Weight Training, Conditioning, Yoga). Research Block and Health Centre.
